make your web site work harder

how to keep your web site legal:
The e-commerce and distance selling regulations

These regulations specify the sort of business information that you must provide on your site, including, for example:

  • The full name of your business and, if you are a sole trader, your own name.
  • Business contact details including an e-mail address.
  • An address for your business that shows your actual geographic location e.g. make it clear that you are based in the UK so that your customers know that UK laws apply (if this is the case).
  • If you are in a regulated profession then provide details of the professional body that you are registered with, your professional title, the EU Member State that you are registered in and the rules that apply to you, or a link to them.
  • Your VAT registration number (if you are registered) anywhere that you are showing prices on your site.
  • If you mention prices on your site they must clearly show any tax and delivery elements.
  • There are further requirements if you are actually selling online – check out 'Don't panic – do e-commerce' for a full introduction. You can find it in the links section of the DTI Electronic Commerce Directive page which also has guides on the regulations for businesses (use the 'guidance on the regulations' link). If you are selling online you also need to be aware of the Distance Selling regulations, again from the DTI web site.
